Districting

The Districting tool allows you to reallocate the bricks of non-overlapping study areas/territories to other study areas/territories. These areas must be component areas, not shapes such as circles or drivetimes. Study areas can be created individually within InSite. Expressions such as population counts may be added to enable you to balance your study areas.

To set up the study areas to be re-districted:

  • Open a map, go to the Districting tab then select Configure

  • If your study area is not already displayed select Add

  • Highlight it and select Make Available... This will place it on the right-hand side

  • If you want any expressions to appear when districting, select the Expressions… button and add your expression

  • If you don’t want to add an expression select Add Layer

  • A thematic layer will appear on the map behind, displaying the components for each area in a different colour.

  • Select OK

To enable the layer:

  • Click on one of the components on the map that you wish to move to a new study area. Use the Ctrl key on your keyboard if you want to select and move more than one at a time

  • Hold down the left mouse button and drag them to the study area you want to assign them to, then release

  • A message will appear asking Assign selected areas to the catchment? Select Yes

A map with different colored areas Description automatically generated
  • After you select yes, two boxes will appear in the top corners of your map; The first telling you how many components you are moving, along with the expression you added earlier (if you added one), and the second showing you the new and old study area, along with the expression added (again, if you added one)

To create a NEW study area:

  • Select Add Base

  • Type in a Key and a Description then click OK

  • When you’re finished re-districting completely select Update Boundaries in the Districting tab

  • These changes are now permanent
