Adding a Web Service Map Layer

If you like to use a particular map backcloth that is not available within your system, you can easily bring this in by using a Web Service Map Layer. InSite offers the ability to display any web map service as a layer, to which further layers can be added to give it additional personalisation.

To add a mapping service within InSite:

  • Open a new map

  • On the Maps ribbon, click on Image & Web from the Add Layer section

  • In the Layer Wizard, select the Web option

  • Choose Next and select Web Mapping Service (WMS)

  • Choose Next

  • You will need to provide the URL of a web mapping service in the box at the top

  • By default, there is an example URL to get you started, however, feel free to use your preferred web service: http://ows.terrestris.de/osm/service

  • Click Connect to load the layers

  • In the Layers section, it will show all available layers from this service

  • Select the one to use by ticking the box in the Use column on the left

  • If there are multiple styles, select these from the dropdown in the Style column

  • To finish, click Create

  • This will add the layer to the map from the online service. The layer definition, details, fonts and colours will all be pulled through from the service selected
