Creating a thematic layer directly from a browse

Thematic map layers may be created directly from a browse window, saving time and making the process streamlined. Any appropriate column may be used as InSite will determine the appropriate thematic method (Discrete or Continuous).

Note: To determine the number of classes, InSite uses the default within the project which can be edited in Options (Options | Map | New Map Layer | Classifications – Initial Number of Classes). The new layer also uses the default system colours which can be edited afterwards.

The example below maps Postcode Districts by the percentage of Acorn Category 3 (Thriving Neighbourhoods) households:

  • Open a browse and add the column you would like to thematically map

  • Select this column by clicking on the column header (the column will turn blue once selected)

  • Right click on the column and select Add Thematic Layer

  • Choose the map you would like to add the layer to. This menu shows New Map at the top with any other open maps below

The layer is automatically calculated and added to the map. To edit this layer:

  • Whilst in your map, go to the Map Properties tab

  • Right click on the layer that has been added, in this case Postcode Districts, and select Edit…

  • Here, you can go through the different pages of the wizard to set a filter, adjust classes, and change colours

In this example I have changed the colours:
