Summarizing Data in an Info Block

An Info Block allows the user to display information about an area by clicking on the map. This can be especially useful when you are you trying to determine a catchment area and need to provide a snapshot to a client or stakeholder.

The Info Block now comes with three options

  • Selection only

  • Summary only

  • Selection and summary

This tip explores these options in more detail

Setting up an Info Block

In this example, we will add postcode sectors to a map and then display the number of households within each Acorn Category

  • Drag on the Postcode Sectors

  • Open a map

  • Set the Focus Layer to Postcode Sector boundary layer

  • Click on the Annotations tab within Map Properties

  • Right click on Info Blocks and then Add Info Block

  • Select the Info Block of choice

  • Once the Info Block has been added to the ma

  • Right click on the Info Block table from the list

  • Select Change Selection Expression

  • Select the variables of interest and add them to your Info Block

  1. Selection Only

Selection Only info blocks display data about the areas selected in a list

  1. Summary Only

Summary Only info block provides a count of the number of areas selected along with the accumulated totals for each variable. In this case, the total number of households within each Acorn Category for the three postcode sectors selected

  1. Selection and Summary

This selection combines both the selection and summary elements from the above options, giving a complete picture of your area.
