Creating bespoke catchments from a map

You can create catchments directly from a layer on a map, which are known as component catchments

  • Open a map and add on a layer of components that will be used to create your catchment

  • Here Postcode Sectors have been added by dragging and dropping the Postcode Geography Schema

  • Use Find Location to move to your required area

  • Set the Postcode Sector layer to be the Focus layer

  • Click on the Sectors required; holding down the ctrl button to select more than one

  • Alternatively, you can use one of the selection shapes to select the required area for your catchment

Selecting using Selection Shapes

The ‘Selection Shapes’ tools are located under the ‘Maps’ tab.

The Circle and the Rectangle tool work by clicking on the map and dragging the mouse over the Sectors you require. The Polygon tool works by clicking on the map around the area required and then double clicking to close the polygon.

Note: Once you have created a catchment area using one of the above tools, components can be added or removed by clicking on the map whilst holding the Ctrl button on your keyboard.

  • Once the Postcode Sectors have been selected, right click, choose Tagging|Tag selected

  • Now store the tagging by choosing Tagging|Store Tagging

  • Choose the schema in which to store the study area

  • Choose OK

  • Give the catchment a Name and Description and choose OK

Note: You may need to create a New Schema if you are not using Postcode Sectors. See Creating a new study area schema.

The newly created catchment area can be used in a few ways.

  1. It can be opened in a Browse to explore the demographics of an area

  2. It can be selected in Locator as either a base or an area to run a report on

  3. It can be used as a filter in other InSite applications
