Creating polygons on a map

InSite offers a lot of flexibility in creating catchments. On some occasions, you may need to create a shape that is highly bespoke or needs to be replicated from a different system, a report or image.

In addition to generating shapes through the various applications, you can also draw custom shapes directly from a map, giving you unparalleled freedom in its final appearance (this can then be edited further in combination with the Editing Polygons guide).

Step by Step (Central Northampton example)

  • Open a map

  • Change the Focus Layer to Selection Area

  • Use Find Location to move to your required area

Depending on the shape you’re looking to create, you will have a few different options (via the Selection Shape menu on the Maps ribbon)

  • Polygon

  • Rectangle

  • Circle

  • With each of these selection shapes you can click on the map and draw the shape as you wish. With the Polygon tool, you draw a custom multi-sided shape where each click adds a new node (corner) and double clicking auto-completes the shape

  • After the shape is complete, you can then store the shape to any of your shape schemas, such as Circles & DriveTimes. To do this, from the Maps ribbon, click on Store within the Selection Shape section

  • From the resulting pop-up, you’ll need to give the shape a Key (Name) and Description, you can then choose the schema it will be saved to. When this is done, click Ok

  • This shape can then be used in the same way as any other stored shape, whether on a browse, map or from within Locator

Note: If you would like to create another shape in this manner, make sure you click Clear Shapes from the Selection Shape menu on the Maps ribbon before continuing to avoid duplication or mix-up.
