Saved Map Locations

This tip will look at how we can use the Saved Positions function to reposition the map window (and view extent) to a previously saved location and how we can use Options to change the starting position of a newly opened map.

This could be useful when:

  • Working in specific locations

  • Making maps of the same location with identical scales

  • Saving an extent that fits well within a print template

To use the ‘Saved Positions’ function:

  • Open a map

  • Zoom into the required location, ensuring that the whole area of interest can be viewed on screen

  • Right-click on the map

  • Hover over the Saved locations option and then select Manage…

You will then be given the option to save the location in either:

Application: Allows the user to access the saved location within any project.

Current project: User will only be able to access the saved location within the current project.

  • After selecting the appropriate tab, click the ‘New’ button next to the ‘Saved Positions’ box

  • The map location will then be added to the ‘Save Positions’ box under the default name ‘position 1’ or ‘position 0’.

  • To customize the name of the saved location, click on the record’s name in the Saved Positions box and a data entry box should open for you to rename it

To use this saved location when opening a new map:

Open ‘Find Location’

  • Select the ‘Coordinates’ tab

  • Highlight the appropriate saved location

  • Click ‘OK’
